Did you know there are etiquette rules with video conferencing? You use your manners (we hope) in your other business dealings so this needs to be carried over to video conferencing as well. So, over the next few weeks, we will share a few common mistakes that people make. These great pointers are courtesy of our wonderful friends at LifeSize namely Ms. Jacey Overton. Here is what Ms. Overton calls “Faux Pas” #1:

1. Distracting workspaces:

Video conferencing in high-definition is here and that means it is more important than ever to be aware of your workspace and what your colleagues can see in high-definition. Did your coworker write a funny note on your whiteboard or hang up an unflattering photograph of you as a joke? Though it is important to personalize your office or environment, make sure that you keep things business-appropriate and remove any questionable items you may have on display before a video call.

If you are in a meeting room or conference room, be aware of what is written on all white boards, SMART Boards and collaborative areas. Whether it is confidential information or an office prank, remember that those joining you on your video call may be able to read every last word.

So watch for “Faux Pas” #2 coming soon. Visit www.lifesize.com for more information or our site as well atwww.pointswestav.com

SMART Notebook™ collaborative learning software sets the standard for creating, delivering and managing interactive lessons within a single application. Now, you will be able to combine your favorite tools in SMART Notebook with your favorite tools from the Web. Plus, with its new features, the best aspects of SMART Notebook software have been expanded.

Watch a video: SMART Notebook 11 Introduction

New Features:

Insert web browsers directly onto a SMART Notebook software page and use tools to draw and write over web pages and drag and drop images into your lesson. You can also open the live page directly from within the lesson.

Create activities where objects react to actions by accepting or rejecting other objects or by triggering animations or sound. The activity builder is great for arranging, sorting and labeling and for creating VENN diagrams.

Choose an object and the toolbar changes, so all the tools you need are right in front of you

Create authentic crayon drawings on a SMART Board interactive whiteboard.

Customize your creative pen! Build your own creative pen using any image you choose. If you thought the smiley face and daisy were cool, just wait!

Record sounds directly into your SMART Notebook lesson.

Adjust the size of an image to fit into a shape.

Reset Page: Use this feature to return your page to its last saved state

When it comes to supporting your students on a visual level, there is a good chance you have this covered with technologies such as interactive whiteboards and projectors. However, unless clear and even sound distribution is part of the equation, students can actually miss up to 40% of what’s being taught, and these are students with full hearing capability!

There is significant proof that aboriginal children suffer from a high incidence of ear infections, giving further cause for concern. By ensuring all students can hear what is being taught in the classroom as a complement to the visual, FrontRow quality audio provides benefits such as:

Evenly distributed sound throughout the classroom – every child gets a front row seat for learning

An inclusive learning environment for all – including ESL, First Nations and exceptional learners

Support for podcasts, webcasts, video conferences and other 21st century learning tools

Improved classroom behavior, comprehension and attention

Reduced teacher vocal fatigue and absenteeism

Missing the audio component for your 21st century classroom?

Your School Could Win a $10,000 Prize Pack from FrontRow!

CONTEST DETAILS

How does this contest work?

Every time a school takes advantage of FrontRow’s free evaluation program (i.e. trying a FrontRow system for 45 days without obligation) and then decides to PURCHASE the system, the school will be entered into our exclusive $10,000 prize pack draw, including $5,000 in free cash plus $5,000 in free FrontRow product. This promotion will run throughout 2012, with the winner chosen at the end of the year.

Who wins the prize – an individual at the school or the school itself?

The prize goes to the school where the FrontRow system is being used. For example, if the system is being used in Mrs. Smith’s class, Mrs. Smith doesn’t personally win $5,000 and $5,000 worth of new FrontRow product. The prize goes to Mrs. Smith’s school to use as it sees fit.

Who’s eligible to enter?

Any school in Canada is eligible to enter. Remember; you need to purchase FrontRow after trying it to qualify.

When will the winning school be announced?

The draw will take place on December 3, 2012, and the winner will be notified within 48 hours of the draw. Prizes will be awarded within 30 days following the draw. A FrontRow representative will be in touch with the winning school to discuss when its new FrontRow product(s) will be installed, if applicable.

Will the winning school need to pay for the product’s installation?

No – this will be covered by FrontRow.

Which FrontRow system(s) will the winning school be awarded?

We will work hand-in-hand with the school to determine which model is best suited for its unique needs.

Why is FrontRow so important in the classroom?

FrontRow ensures that every student – no matter where they’re seated or what their learning style – can properly hear and understand the lesson. You might be thinking “Isn’t the teacher’s voice loud enough?” But things like distance and background noise make hearing in the classroom extremely difficult. Also consider that children don’t have the ‘contexting’ ability that adults do. If they miss a word or two, they might not understand the meaning of the sentence – whereas adults can use context to decipher what was said and understand concepts.

Other benefits of FrontRow audio include reduced teacher vocal fatigue (since the teacher no longer has to shout to be heard), better multimedia integration (since FrontRow acts as the audio hub of the classroom) and complete student inclusion (since all students, including those with hearing loss or special needs, are given equal access to the lesson).

How can I learn more about this contest or about the FrontRow free trial program?

Simply contact FrontRow at 1-800-340-9894 and they’ll answer any questions you may have.

Do you ever wonder where you should take electronics? Batteries? Strings of broken Christmas lights? TVs, VCRs, or computers when they have reached their end of life? Planet Earth Recycling is the place to go. We discovered Planet Earth Recycling through the fundraising program they have set up with some of the area schools. Not only do you benefit the environment by taking your broken down items to Planet Earth, but you can raise funds for your school as well. Ask if a school in your area is registered with Planet Earth because 1 cent per pound of material can be donated to the school. What a great partnership. Less waste in the landfill and more money in the schools. Hmmmm. Great idea if you ask the team at Points West Audio Visual. Outlined below is more information and you can always reach the great people at Planet Earth Recycling by calling 888-768-0878. They are located in West Kelowna and Penticton and they have a pick up program as well. Visit www.planetearthrecycling.org and get recycling!!

Planet Earth Recycling Ltd. has locations in West Kelowna and Penticton and offers both a recycling drop-off depot service and a collection service, with a service area covering from Vernon in the North to Osoyoos in the South. Planet Earth Recycling Ltd. accepts all types of scrap metals, film plastics, phase I and II electronic waste, appliances (except fridges), automotive batteries, as well as cardboard and all grades of paper.

For pick-up services, Planet Earth Recycling Ltd’s uniformed drivers have new equipment and new recycle totes that put a more professional face to the recycling industry.
